Andrea Elmere, PMHNP- BC
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Greetings! My name is Andrea Elmere. I was born and raised in Warwick, RI and have worked in health care all my life. I feel lucky to have found a career about which I am passionate.
After receiving my nursing degree at URI, I worked in all types of medical nursing , eventually ending in cardiac intensive care. I often cared for young-middle aged individuals after heart attacks frequently caused by an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and poor sleep, all linked to a high-stress lifestyle. I found people responded better if all aspects of their life where addressed: mind, body and spirit. Respecting all of these, people can revise goals and lifestyle to prevent illness.
To pursue this interest, I returned to URI for a masters degree in Psychiatric Nursing. I became a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist allowing me to work in behavioral healthcare. I provided outpatient psychotherapy for over 15 years. In 2011, I trained and certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, allowing me to also prescribe medications.
In all the health care settings in which I practiced, I have come to appreciate several things. Active listening helps to clarify a person’s concerns and goals. Collaboration with patients as well as any medical providers allows for development of the best treatment plans. Combining therapy and medication supports both the mind and body allowing healing and personal growth.
I am now semi-retired but continue to find personal fulfillment and professional satisfaction by assisting others to feel their best. I look forward to meeting you!
